Shake the Dust

Check out “Shake the Dust” and effort to bring people together through Hip-Hop. Not my personal favourite type of music but if it can bring others together and bring their stories to the world then I fully support it.

Found out about it from the TED talk by Nadia Al-Sakkaf: See Yemen through my eyes. I loved when I heard her talk about “parachute reporting”. She’s so incredibly right. We get short blips of a story through our news, we rarely get the whole story or truly understand the plight of others. In fact I sometimes wonder if we just read/watch/listen to the news so we can know that someone is doing it harder than ourselves and thereby making ourselves feel better for a time?

I know I try to avoid News reporting in traditional media. It is ALL parachute reporting. Get the sound-bite, get the juicy bits and leave out the substance. I’d love to get us back to long-form reporting.

But for now, enjoy “Shake the Dust” and follow their journey. Find joy in the joy of others, not betterment through the misery of others.
