Sara says I’m weird

All right, she doesn’t Sara says I am normal, now that she knows that there is a reason for my strange behaviour.

Here’s the thing, when I go out into the sun I sneeze. Not just one sneeze like most people do, I sneeze many, many times. I think the most consecutive sneezes was around 20 in one go.

When first seen, the general reaction from most people when they see me in a fit of sneezing, is side-splitting laughter.

A lot of people have given up on blessing me, or wait until the very end and bless me in bulk.

Sara sent me an email today all about Photic Sneeze Reflex, apparently this is what I suffer from, and it’s genetic… but according to the Wikipedia I can’t blame my mum or dad, cause either of them could have passed it on.

Thanks Sara for explaining my crazy actions. Everyone else, let me know if you know another Photic Sneezer.

  1. Photic Sneeze Reflex is quite real. I have it. My daughter, mother, and grandfather have/had it. Done some minor research on it. Been known for hundreds of years.

Here’s my take on personality types though:
Personality types however are not real. They are human inventions that have little useful purpose and many unintended negative consequences.

  2. Thanks for the comments Michael. It’s clear you have a pretty straight line regarding the passing on of the Photic Sneeze Reflex. But no one else in my family does it :'( Maybe I’m adopted. Just kidding.

On Personality types though I must say they are a bit of fun. And all the more fun if people read them and think that they know me from it. It’s nice to keep them guessing.

  3. It must be a family trait. A particular person I have worked with for the past 6 years, I can still hear snicker everytime I sneeze. It usually gets described as a girly sneeze.

I thought I developed it on purpose becaue I didn’t like snorty yuk stuff everywhere but maybe it is a general “condition”.

  4. I’ve never really noticed you sneezing that way. Jennifer gets annoyed when she says I’m “sniffing the sun”.

I don’t know any of our elders that sneeze that way, do you?

  5. Hi Tyroga

You are not the only one to sneeze in the sun. When the Internet started, a number of us who shared this anomaly got together and pooled resources, which is now here It’s in need of an update, but there is so much on the Internet in general that we have not felt compelled to do so.

You will be interested to know that one of the group is an Australian, and he seems to be the only one in his family with photic sneezing. In my family it comes from my grandfather, through my father and my only brother has it too, so it has obviously been inherited.

As for the number of sneezes, I think this depends on the individual, but there is probably a heriditary component there too. In our family (father’s side) sneezes tend to come in twos, but I can (as my grandfather could) do have quite a few repeats, especially if the exposure to the sunlight is sudden, or the light comes from above and below at the same time.
