Naturally Healthy or Borderline Mad?

Apple Cider VinegarSZ sent me a couple of links overnight regarding some natural remedies. In particular the use of Hydrogen Peroxide and Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) as cures for everything from the common cold to the BIG C (cancer).

I’m always open to alternative medicine from my drugstore at and will probably give these guys a go (well maybe not the Peroxide as food-grade H2O2 is hard to get and very corrosive) but I was also a little concerned to read that:

“one reader reported that a shot of ACV (I’m assuming that means shot glass, not injection) saved him from going to the emergency room for heart pain.”

As I said, I’m all for natural remedies, but if I’m feeling a little pain in my heart, even if I take the apple cider vinegar… you can bet I’m STILL going to the emergency room.

The site also says that ACV breaks down fat and is widely used to lose weight. Well anyone who uses products such as Milk Thistle and the like knows that the bitter taste causes the liver to produce something or other which actually causes the fat to metabolise, although there are other ways to keep your body healthy like is said on healthy usa. So it’s not really the ACV that is doing all the work, it’s just starting the production line.

Oh and in case you’re wondering, the other things that ACV is good for is as follows (according the the site):

Abdominal Adhesions, Acid Reflux, Allergies, Acne, Arthritis, Asthma, Blood Pressure, Burns, Bursitis, Canker Sores, Cough, Cuticle Pain, Depression, Dermatitis, Diarrhoea, Ear Infections, Fever, Fibromyalgia, Flu, Food Poisoning, Foul Smelling Stools, Fungus, Gas, GERD, Gallbladder Problems, Gout, Hair & Scalp Problems, Hair Conditioner, Halitosis, Headaches & Migraines, Heartburn, Heart Pain, Hiatel Hernia, High Cholesterol, IBS, Indigestion, Interstitial Cystitis, Knee and Shoulder Joint Pain, Menstruation, Nail Fungus, Nausea, Parasites, Pimples, Shingles, Sprains, Skin Pale, Skin Rash, Sinus Infections, Sinusitis, Sore Throat, Strep Throat, Ulcers , Yeast Infections, Varicose Veins, Warts

So as you can see it is a very, very versatile item. If it can help with Migraines and Menstruation then I’m willing to give it a try… oh wait I don’t menstruate… so maybe just the Migraines then. :P

Obviously I follow this with a warning that I don’t recommend anyone taking on any treatment (natural or other) without doing their own research and seeking their own medical advice from a medical professional, one of which I am certainly not (sorry Mum I didn’t become a Doctor).

WordPress 2.1.1

Will this work? Only time will tell. I see a few errors there so it may not actually work.

Had a couple of issues with the upgrade and the the first time I tried editor did not seem to want to work in Flock (a Firefox derivative).

Hopefully you’re reading this post and it worked, if not I guess you’re not reading it so I don’t need to say the if not bit. You either see it or you don’t.

At first glance it all looks good, there is now auto-save and a new visual/code fields for the post.

I had hoped to launch with a new (temporary) them, from someone else’s site ( a free wordPress theme site, I wasn’t ripping it off), but the theme I liked didn’t want to work with this version of WordPress, so I guess I’ll have to wait until I can get my own NEW theme all configured.

Stay tuned.

Everything’s Coming up Roses…

GypsyIt was a long long time ago that I first saw the TV version of Gypsy, with Bette Midler in the role of Rose. Sure I had seen the movie version too. But no one plays Momma like Bette.

With the tenacity that only Bette can convey on screen Gypsy came alive.

Finally the soundtrack has become available on iTunes store, and being the happy little show-tunes boys we are, we snapped it up.

The story of real life burlesque performer Gypsy Rose Lee, “Gypsy” is the story of… well I suppose that’s the thing… is the story about Gypsy or her mother Rose? Either way it shows the rise of Gypsy Rose Lee from her meek beginnings under the shadow of her sister, June.

If the story is to be believed in its entirety, the girls were virtually forced into performing as a way of making money for their mother who had divorced their father previously. Rose was a true Stage Mother. Living out her dreams through her children.

When June married at 16 and left the show, Mother was left with with Louise (Gypsy) who’s talent was all that impressive on her own. It was Louise’s idea to move into burlesque and perform striptease, with an emphasis on the tease.

She is famous for her choreography and witty banter during her striptease performances which hadn’t been seen before. Previous performers generally stripped and left… Gypsy’s hook was to tease them and leave them wanting more, but never giving it to them. I think there is something in that for all of us.

Louise wrote several books in her later years, two of them murder mystery novels, a play and of course her memoirs “Gypsy” which became the basis for the musical.

Mika, A New Sensation?

Mika - A Life in Cartoon MotionPronounced “Meeka” he is the latest sensation our of the UK often referred to as a UK version of the Scissor Sisters, and I admit at times I get a hint of them.

But truth be told, in my opinion, Mika sounds a lot more like a blend of the Beatles, Elton John and on the track “My Interpretation”, he sounds a little too much like the Dawson’s Creek them.

Mika’s first single from “A Life in Cartoon Motion” is “Grace Kelly” for our UK readers at least. However here in Australia we have been presented with “A Dodgy Holiday – EP” which has a track listing void of “Grace Kelly”, but headlined by “Billy Brown”.

The sounds of “A Life in Cartoon Motion” are eclectic to say the least and it’s a good listen. Something different and new is always good. Download it today :P

Daily Life In the News Rants

Inequality Reigns Supreme

I gotta say, when I heard about the City of Melbourne attempting to enact a “Relationship Declaration Register” I was kind of impressed and happy to join the people who support it… but then I got to reading and knowing that this will in fact JUST be a list of the gays, I no longer wanted to be a part of it, or support it.

If this is just a list for me to go on to reference my 10 year relationship with my same-sex partner, but offers nothing formal, why do we need it or want it.

Marriage or civil unions which confer full relationship recognition and the benefits and liabilities that go along with it, that’s what I want. Not some half-hearted attempt.

If this passes it may be perceived that we are happy with the make-do system and I for one won’t be.

No offence at all to my older brother, but he has been happily married for some time now, I was at his wedding and celebrated right along with him. David and I have been together longer and would have been married long before he, HAD WE BEEN ALLOWED.

My Dad has been married twice. My cousin has been married and already separated from her husband… I don’t want to sound like a whinger, but IT’S NOT FAIR!

So I say “No” to the Relationship Declaration Register… for me it sounds too much like the Mutant Register from X-Men the Movie! A list so we know how many there are and where they are.

A similar system already exists in other states and has had little up-take since it’s inception back in 2003. Something like 100 couples all up have registered. A sure sign that this is NOT a solution to the issue.

I went to the City of Melbourne Site and declared that, as a gay man, I don’t want the register. I don’t want to settle for less. I’m not less of a human so why should I settle for less?

I don’t get angry often these days, but this is an injustice. Please don’t support this register. Instead look into your local gay and lesbian rights lobby and support their action for Same-Sex Marriage.

Same-sex couples will be able to register their relationship with the City of Melbourne. Registration will not confer rights but may constitute evidence of a relationship in legal proceedings.

Same-sex couples can register their relationship with the Tasmanian Office of Births, Deaths and Marriages. Registration gives couples immediate access to relationship rights, regardless of such factors as the duration of the relationship, financial interdependence or cohabitation. Only registered partners may adopt, or be presumed to be the parents of, children born to their partners from fertility treatments.

Same-sex couples can register their relationship with the City of Sydney. Registration does not confer rights but may constitute evidence of a relationship in legal proceedings.

Same-sex marriage is allowed in jurisdictions including Canada, the Netherlands, Belgium, South Africa, Spain and Massachusetts (US).
Same-sex civil unions or partnerships are recognised in jurisdictions including Britain, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland, New Zealand, France, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Portugal, Vermont (US) and Connecticut (US).
