I’ve never before been a fan of Sarah McLachlan, not because I don’t like her music, more because I’ve never been exposed to it. Then one day during a random downloading spree, I came across “Afterglow”. To say the least the album is amazing and the song “World on Fire” strikes a particular chord on this day of days.
September 11, 2006 we see the world very changed just five years on from a most terrible day in the worlds history. The song makes me wonder, no not wonder… It makes me think that there is so much more I could be doing to make the world a better place. Why then do I continue doing the day to day, I go to work to make someone else rich, when I really could be off helping others live.
Debt and relationships tie us to a world of servitude… the relationships I’d not change for anything, I’m greatfull for everything I have in this world. But we are all people and no one person is more important than any other person.
Today I was listening to MacBreak Weekly (Ep 5, Dine-o-matic 09/09/06) a podcast by Leo Laporte and while I am usually very happy with Leo’s podcasts he made comments yesterday about how great the first world is, and eluded to the fact that for the people of the third world their lot was theirs to bear. It is the first time I have been reminded that Leo is an American and lives with American sensibilities.
While I know he meant nothing by it, it was a throw away line, I’d like to remind him of the power he has. Many people listen to him… he is a voice to the people, but in this case not of the people.
The worlds on fire its more then I can handle
Ill tap into the water try and bring my share
Try to bring more, more then I can handle
Bring it to the table
Bring what I am ableHearts are worn in these dark ages
your not alone in these stories pages
The light has fallen amongst the living and the dying
And Ill try to hold it in
Yeah Ill try to hold it inChorus
I watch the heavens but I find no calling
Something I can do to change what’s coming
Stay close to me while the skys falling
I don’t wanna be left alone don’t wanna be aloneChorus
Hearts break hearts mend love still hurts
Visions clash planes crash still there’s talk of
saving souls still colds closing in on usWe part the veil on our killer sun
Stray from the straight line on this short run
The more we take the less we become
The fortune of one man means less for someChorus
