Moo… they love to print

Moo Mini Cards

Apparently it’s true; these guys are print crazy… alright I have no idea if that is actually true at all. I’m sure they have their days when they can’t be bothered printing at all, but they have to cause that’s their job. But as I always say you should enjoy what you do and if you can say that you “LOVE TO PRINT” then print you must.

Enough rambling. The guys at moo.com have put the Flickr API to great use. They are allowing people to print MiniCards featuring your Flickr photos on one side and varible data on the other side.
For a limited time all Flickr Pro users can sample 10 FREE MiniCards shipped anywhere in the world.

I’ve ordered mine already and if they are alright, I’ll easily go for the 100 Pack, at only 19.99 they are awesome. But as the saying goes, the proof in the puddin’ and all…

Kid with Two Fathers

Great YouTube vid… there are times I wish we could have kids… but then I’d have to share all my toys. And it’s my Lego dammit!

PS It’s a reading video… I know some people out there don’t like watch and read, but please make an exception. It’s just so cute.

Oh and one quick thing, there have been a few videos I’ve wanted to add in the past, but never got around to it because one thing about WordPress; it doesn’t like you messing with the HTML it thinks you should have here. So today, because I really wanted to include this one, I went searching. And found Viper’s Video Quicktags. Great little wordpress plug-in.

Big Cats in Big Trouble

TWENTY-ONE lions are dying in a zoo in north India after across-breeding experiment to boost the park’s attractions went wrong.

In the 1980s, officials at the Chhatbir Zoo in the northern city of Chandigarh, bred captive Asiatic lions with a pair of African circus animals, resulting in a hybrid species.

Within a few years, it became obvious it had not worked. The offspring found it hard to walk, let alone run, because their hind legs were weak. And by the mid-90s the big cats showed symptoms of failing immune systems.

But it wasn’t until 2000 that the breeding program was ended, and the male lions given vasectomies, by which time the zoo had 70 to 80 such lions.

Indian zoo helps crossbred lions ‘die with dignity’ – World – theage.com.au

This story angers me… within a few years they knew there were problems with the lions, but they continued to breed them? And now with 70-80 still alive, but dying. The title of the story on The Age is Indian zoo helps crossbred lions ‘die with dignity’.

But what dignity is there for these poor human-created creatures, with limbs failling unable to eat and now drip-fed to stay alive? Give these poor guys the green dream and let them have peace.

It saddens me that these poor creatures are forced to live. In the wild, not that they would ever appear in the wild, these animals would have already died out or been killed off as the weaker creatures they are.

iPod Mania

To anyone who thought I had too many iPods… check it out at TechEBlog. A short piece on strange iPod cases. The cat one, it just looks so wrong.

On the iPod theme we went to JB Hi-Fi yesterday and we saw the new coloured Nanos, they are sweet as, not that I have any way to justify the purchase of yet another iPod. They are so tiny and so brightly coloured. And they come in a clear plastic hard case. Apple again reviewing their packaging and deciding to take everything away… obviously they feel they’ve reached the level of popularity where there is nothing more to say about the product and they just let it stand on its own.

So many will yawn!

The Apple announcement has come and gone and as many had predicted the image posted yesterday was indeed a hoax… there was no new full-screen video iPod, there was however new iPods.

iPod Shuffle

The iPod Shuffle has been relegated to the world of the lapel clip and is only available as a 1GB model at AUD$119, no longer a USB connector it has its own little dock and updates via the headphone jack.

iPod Nano

The coloured Nano’s that people have been asking for for ages Pink, Blue, Green, Silver, and Black (no white) and the Gold appears to be the only Mini colour to go missing. Add to this the new capacity of 8GB in an even smaller shell. Though I have to say some people won’t be happy… the 8GB only comes in Black (according the the Australian Apple Store), the 2GB only comes in Silver and the 4GB in Silver, Pink, Blue or Green. I’d love to upgrade my 4GB Mini to a nice Blue Nano, but I’d really want the 8GB model… what are they thinking!

The Video iPod, now just known as the iPod comes in two capacities, 30GB and 80GB but isn’t full screen, it doesn however have a 60% brighter screen and up to 20 hours playback from the battery. It’s not that my interest in iPods is wanning, but I think I’ll still hold out for more of a media player before I upgrade. Though the 80GB would hold ALL of my music, something my 60GB is no longer capable of… hmmm.

The only other “iPod” news is that the iPod Hi-fi appears to be banished to the accessory pages, no longer on the iPod page at all, oh and that the Apple Store online now has a dedicated iPod Sub-Store.

Other Apple news, the iTMS (iTunes Music Store) is no more, it is now just the iTS or iTunes Store, because there is now of course Movies available for download… though not to Australians yet. I tell ya, it sucks I can jump on Amazon and buy a book that isn’t available in Australia, they’ll ship it no problem, but Music, TV shows and Movies… no way Jose! What is with that. TV I can kind of understand I’m sure the networks who produce the shows rely on a certain amount of income from the ads they sign, but music and movies? It’s not like our movie and music companies here aren’t feeding into the coffers of their US based head offices so what’s the deal?

With the new iTunes Store there is also a new iTunes, the icon is now blue and the interface is a little cooler.

Say it isn’t so

O.K. It has to be said that this may be a fake image, but I gotta blog it anyway… cause I want it to be true, almost as much as I wanted the Holden Blip that emerged from the clouds last Saturday night over Melbourne to be a real life UFO (which is what it really looked like for a while, I swear it’s true).

Actually I don’t want it to be true… cause if you saw the photo in my previous post, you know I own too many iPods already… and not only do I not NEED another one, I can’t really afford one either, but geeze NEED or not, I WANT IT.

The image of course has some sort of Front Row on the iPod, and the icons that are shown don’t really make sense to an iPod, it seems that the image has exactly what Front Row has, iTunes, iPhoto, Movies and DVD obviously you can’t put a DVD into an iPod so surely all that would come under movies.
With the “Show time” name, this event is obviously all about movies. And the fact that they launched the iMacs with zero fanfare (and a 24″ iMac deserved some) means they gotta have something really big coming right?

Oh I don’t know… guess Wednesday (our time) is not so far away. Waiting to exhale…

[box type=”info”]Update: 20110109 While this was revealed as a fake, it was so on the money. Apple did indeed release the iPod Touch at the event and it did have the form factor shown in the image. I didn’t however have the interface shown. There have since been three iterations of the iPod Touch. I only own the first. But have bought the other two for other people.[/box]

World on Fire

Sarah McLachlan - AfterglowI’ve never before been a fan of Sarah McLachlan, not because I don’t like her music, more because I’ve never been exposed to it. Then one day during a random downloading spree, I came across “Afterglow”. To say the least the album is amazing and the song “World on Fire” strikes a particular chord on this day of days.

September 11, 2006 we see the world very changed just five years on from a most terrible day in the worlds history. The song makes me wonder, no not wonder… It makes me think that there is so much more I could be doing to make the world a better place. Why then do I continue doing the day to day, I go to work to make someone else rich, when I really could be off helping others live.

Debt and relationships tie us to a world of servitude… the relationships I’d not change for anything, I’m greatfull for everything I have in this world. But we are all people and no one person is more important than any other person.

Today I was listening to MacBreak Weekly (Ep 5, Dine-o-matic 09/09/06) a podcast by Leo Laporte and while I am usually very happy with Leo’s podcasts he made comments yesterday about how great the first world is, and eluded to the fact that for the people of the third world their lot was theirs to bear. It is the first time I have been reminded that Leo is an American and lives with American sensibilities.

While I know he meant nothing by it, it was a throw away line, I’d like to remind him of the power he has. Many people listen to him… he is a voice to the people, but in this case not of the people.

The worlds on fire its more then I can handle
Ill tap into the water try and bring my share
Try to bring more, more then I can handle
Bring it to the table
Bring what I am able

Hearts are worn in these dark ages
your not alone in these stories pages
The light has fallen amongst the living and the dying
And Ill try to hold it in
Yeah Ill try to hold it in

Chorus

I watch the heavens but I find no calling
Something I can do to change what’s coming
Stay close to me while the skys falling
I don’t wanna be left alone don’t wanna be alone

Chorus

Hearts break hearts mend love still hurts
Visions clash planes crash still there’s talk of
saving souls still colds closing in on us

We part the veil on our killer sun
Stray from the straight line on this short run
The more we take the less we become
The fortune of one man means less for some

Chorus

Words and music by Sarah McLachlan 2003, Find the song and listen to it… the sentiments are worth your time.
