Back to Basics

Christina Aguilera - Back to Basics

Christina Aguilera is Back to Basics. A new album and a tribute to the music of the 20’s – 40’s of the last century.

A lot of jazzy, swing sounds… a lot of horns and a lot of Christina’s fantasic voice.

Most of the songs on this two disc set are uplifting with the exception of “Oh Mother” where much like “I’m OK” from Stripped Christina sings about her turbulant childhood and her mother’s treatment at the hand of a heavy-handed father.

Sure I may have come across this recording through a not so honest means, but like always when it is finally released I’ll pick up a copy. Given the amount of blending with older music styles I think I’ll even get this one as hardware (rather than the usual download). That way I get to read all the cover notes as well and see where the music came from.

Scratch that last bit, I just pre-ordered on iTMS (iTunes Music Store) where for $20.99 we get the digital booklet, a bonus track and a bonus video. Official release date 12th August 2006.

This album is everywhere on the net and you can’t tell me that it’s out there without some deliberate leak from the record company. And true fans will make a grab for it as soon as they can… but true fans will also buy the album when it finally becomes available.

One thing I don’t get is why big artists aren’t walking away from the record companies in droves, I mean they have the reach, most of them have the money to self-produce why are they settling for the pittance the record companies would give them.

Maybe it’s the fact that they get paid up-front for their multi-record deals. Who knows.

But while I’m ranting let me say this… George Michael you suck!

I remember you saying that all future music you release would be FREE and that all you would ask is that people who download it from your site donate to charity… but there you are, new single and “under exclusive license to Sony” no less. Dude have you blown all your money already?

Star Trek XI

Star Trek XIOMG… right on the tail of yesterday’s news about Matt and Leo being in the same movie, today I heard even more exciting news… talk about mixing favourites… MATT DAMON as James T Kirk in Star Trek XI (2008).

Personally I think it should be called Star Trek 0.5 as it’s going to be a prequel and centre around Star Fleet Acadamy.

J.J. Abrams (creator of Lost, Alias) is on to Direct and a couple of the writers (Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman) are from Alias… just what Star Trek needed some new blood.

There has been some comments going round that this may end up being Felicity (also a J.J. Abrams invention) in space. But with the Alias writers on-board I think it is going to be so much more.

I have to be honest and say that most of the Star Trek movies have been pretty lacklustre. I’m certain the problem has been studio interference and budgets too low to do what they need to do. If you went cold on Star Trek and never got to check it out, I suggest you try Star Trek: Voyager it’s helmed by a captain who knows how to kick ass.
Who knows, maybe this movie will introduce new characters who can spin-off into a new TV series or a new series of movies. One thing’s for sure… the world can always do with more Star Trek… bring it on.

Something’s Wrong With the World

In IraqSheesh what a grand statement you say… and some will be saying well duh! We all know that.

Last night I watched the rest of “Mrs Henderson Presents“, a fantastic movie, Dame Judi Dench at her finest (and at times funniest).

But the raw emotion when she stands in front of a group of service men and laments her now dead son who fought for his country in WWI is quite gripping, though short lived. It got me thinking (which I do at times, shocking I know), just how wrong the current war is.

Both in One Movie… can it be true?

Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio together at lastWhat a job this dude has. Taking stills on sets of movies. Found this on Flickr taken by solaceincinema a few shots from the person from different movies…

I know Matt and his wife had recently had a baby… but he’s still choice eye candy and Leo’s a fave even from his days in “Growing Pains”. This movie (sorry David) is a must see, and I don’t even know what it is about.

The movie is “The Departed“, check it out on IMDB.

This is what they mean by box office pull I guess, when you’ll go along to a movie because of the stars that are in it… Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio… who could ask for more?

BBall: We Won Again

Four games in a row and this time I scored three points, but not all in one go… While going for a shot I was fouled, the two points were allowed and a free throw was awarded so yay 3 points for me.

Of course we also have Stephan who scored 37 points, he’s a bit of a powerhouse player (thank goodness).

We still have to win the next two games to be in the finals. And at some stage I really, really need to read the rule book.

Sick an’ Tired

Yep that’s been me the last few days… bloody flu, I should start having flu shots in an attempt to avoid it in the future.

On the up-side I have seen a few movies lately… reviews to follow.
