On the Move… AGAIN ;)

(Cross-posted both here and on my former blog at Blogger)

Yes I know hard to believe, but this will be the last time for a long while I promise.

WordPress is the new blog of choice, Thanks Craig for making me have a look around.

I originally went with Blogger because it is free and because I could use its interface to post to my own server.

Well Craig, who is about to move to the Americas is looking to start a new blog. When he asked for a recommendation I, naturally, went with what I know.

Then his partner Mark, pointed out that you can’t categorize your posts with Blogger, but you can with WordPress and WordPress is also FREE. I went to WordPress.com today and signed up for an account and posted my first blog.

Then Craig asked about wordpress.org… I had to take a look. At first I thought it was a downloadable application that you install on your computer as an interface into wordpress.com, but not so.

WordPress.org is a download of the original php files used to create WordPress, and you are free to use it on your own server, posting to your own server… And after half a day of playing with it… I can say it is GREAT. Perfect for what I want to do, much easier to use than Blogger AND yes you can categorize your posts.

So for now check it out at http://www.tyroga.com/blog/ I’ll be moving all of the posts I’ve done here (and any others I can find in old blogs), because another feature of WordPress is that you can manipulate the post time, so I can put stuff in from way back when if I want and it will appear in the correct order. YAY.

Oh and I downloaded the theme that is on it now… it’s not that pretty, but I’m working on my own (probably a you read this).

Vindows Wista

DSC00205.jpgWho was it, c’mon you know who you are… who showed David where to get the Beta for Windows Vista. You’re done for buddy!

We now have a Windows Vista Machine in our lounge room operating as our Media Centre. Sure it looks fantastic, but Solitaire took just 67 seconds to stop responding. And when you Ctrl+Alt+Delete to force quit the application, Windows asks do you want to:

  1. Let windows try and figure out what is wrong
  2. Restart the application

There needs to be a “3. Just get rid of the crappy app, I’m done with it”, in the end we chose 2. And it took around 20 seconds to restart the application just so we could quit it.

And you may have heard (if you’re interested in the Windows world) that Vista has a lot of erksome features, the big one being the fact that you have to authorise the computer to do ANYTHING. Everywhere a little sheild appears on a button or next to a command, the computer is going to check with you that you are the one who actually requested it to do whatever it is that the button does.

And Oh My God, you’d think they’d finally made it so you can change screen font sizes without a restart, but no… they have not :-(

On the up side, it looks FANTASTIC, compared to the current version of Windows Media Center Edition we have running, the display is crystal clear on our Samsung rear-projection TV. The interface is cute, not so different that you’d get lost, though they have chnaged the names on some of the menu items.

All up not a bad attempt, still a Beta and I think we’ll be installing drivers for a while to get it all going. Oh for Mac simplicity, all I had to do to set up my G5 Tower was stick the disc in and let it go.

Day Dreaming of Sleep

Oi what’s with the weather here in Melbourne. I swear for most of yesterday and last night it was like a tornado was running around and around the house.

I got next to no sleep last night, windows were rattling, doors were creaking and at least one time I believe the whole house shook from the brute force of the wind, I need to learn how blue light affects sleep so that maybe I could fall asleep. We also happen to have an electrical box on the side of the hosue that we can’t secure completely closed, the latch lets go all the time and bang, bang, bang it goes.

I don’t think I’m a light sleeper, well maybe I am because last night, sleep I did not. Cross your fingers for me that tonight is a little easier, cause I get agitated when I don’t get enough sleep, and it ain’t a pretty sight.

Invasion of Super Mario

New Super Mario DSYes it’s true… starting next weekend I will be a Mario widower for at least two weeks. David LOVES Mario and all things Nintendo. I know the Wii is in our future.

So think of me next week and know that I’ll be doing something all by myself while David plays Nintendo (and maybe even on a DS Lite).

Update: Looks like Mario is arriving early… we are off to pick it up now. Wish me luck.
