What can you say about Orangutans? They are amazing animals, just like all other animals on this wonderful planet of ours.

They always have such thought and expression in their faces. And they seem so wise.

It’s hard to believe that these guys are facing extinction because of human activities. Kind of makes me sad.

All on the mend

I’ve just taken the last of my antibiotics so I guess I should be almost better. YAY.

And in other news I’ve just started a super secret project that perhaps three people in the world will get to see. Very honoured to have been asked. No more details to follow.

Happy Anniversary

Today David and I celebrate our 12th anniversary.

We’ve had a great morning out in Melbourne after a breakfast at Creme in Altona. We just did a touch of shopping. It’s also ANZAC day here in Australia so most of the stores are closed here until 1pm.

We received a call from Nikki and Ben saying they wanted to stop in on their way back from Nikki’s parents’ in Geelong. We were already on our way home from the city so we said yes, and were overjoyed when they arrived. It is always great to see these guys. As Nikki rightly said today they are like our family here in Melbourne a sentiment we are grateful for and feel too.

Their visit had a hidden agenda. Nikki says that David told her about our 10th anniversary a couple of years ago and she wanted to do something for us, but has he told her only the day before there was too little time. Last year Nikki and Ben were almost about due to have the twins and this year she has outdone herself. We both got a bag that contained a mini-me for each of us.

Not just a doll though, they also came with personalised accessories and additional clothes.

Meet Jamie

Jamie Doll

He’s slightly taller than David and has PJs, Work Clothes (with Tie), beachwear and casual clothes (including his Apple Tee).

Jamie also has a camera, with a spare lens, a backpack, books and magazines. This present not only shows how much we are loved, it also shows just how much our friends know us. The books in Jamie’s backpack include Empire (a movie magazine), Popular Photography, Annie Leibovitz at Work and three Wizard of Oz books. The detail is amazing and he will be something I will treasure for ever.

Meet David

David Doll

Like Jamie, the David doll has a range of clothes but has his own accessories.

David includes a teddy bear, white macbook computer, a satchel (for the computer) and a range of his own books including music scores and cookbooks. Truely amazing.

As I’m still recovering from stupid pneumonia we have postponed our anniversary dinner to Wednesday. We’ll be goind to Match Bar and Grill, a location recommended by someone on Twitter.

Oh and if you want to see more of Nikki’s awesome work check out her blog My Black Cardigan.

Damn Pneumonia

As you may have read, last Friday I went to hospital to have a pain in my lung investigated only to find out I had pneumonia. Got some antibiotics and started taking them. And it was good.

By Monday I could take nice deep breaths without any pain, by the afternoon I was feeling tired and Tuesday morning I woke up with pain again when I drew breath.

Today I take my last antibiotic tablet and as the pain is still persisting I guess I’ll be taking a trip back to the doctor again today.

Freaking hate being sick have many other things I’d rather be doing. But as it is I’ve watched quite a few movies in the last few days and slept a whole lot too.

Yesterday I watched:

“Quantum of Solace” – I get why people don’t like it, it’s a little disjointed and doesn’t have the finesse of the other Bond films.

“Sex Drive” – I put it on while I was drifting off to sleep, ended up watching all of it, it was stupidly amusing, what’s stupider is I watched the unrated version where they promised to be better than any other unrated movie, to do so they put random naked women throughout, for no reason at all. It was as I said stupidly funny.

“Outlander” – A sci-fi movie set in the iron age of Earth. An alien crashed to earth in the time of the vikings and must work with them to fight off a creature that has come with him. It is a well-made movie, great effects. Worthy of a much bigger release than it received.

Today I’m watching “The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas” while I wait for the doctor’s to open so I can make an appointment.

This movie is already a little disturbing. Hearing one person refer to the interned Jews as “not really people at all”, the boy learning about the dehumanizing of the prisoners by dressing them all the same and giving them numbers. I really can’t fathom the mind of men who could do what they did.

Battlestar Galactica Finale

Well it has been long enough now, if you haven’t seen the ending of BSG stop reading now or it will be runined for you and I wouldn’t want to do that to anyone. So STOP READING NOW.

David and I went to Jonathan Poh’s place to watch the finally of Battlestar Galactica. It was an awesome night, Jonathan’s partner Simon was there and we were joined by Jake, Greg and Luke. All these geeks in one place was cool. The last five years have pretty much been me sitting by myself watching BSG alone. David actually doesn’t like the show, but he came along anyway for the social aspect.

Not only did I have the new experience of watching the show with others, we were also introduced to the best pizza I have ever tasted, Mojo’s Weird Pizza.

So we settled in and watched the second last episode which all but Jonathan and the non-watchers (David and Simon) had seen. It was a bit weird to be honest, more character development, more about what went on on Caprica before the fall of the colonies. A lot more character background. Given that it was the second last episode I felt that this was more about wasting time than giving any real further insight into the characters that we had already come to know well over the previous years episodes, webisodes and other sources of information that the BSG camp had made available to us.

That’s pretty much all that happened in that episode, it was lame.

But then came the final ever episode of Battlestar Galactica. The chance to wow the audience like never before and to some extent they did that. There was an amazing fight scene when the almost destroyed Galactica jumped in right next to the Cylon Colony ship and immediately started getting pummeled by gunfire only to turn around and give it right back.

I guess I’m still not going to say a lot about the episode, if you saw it you know what I’m talking about if you didn’t then it probably doesn’t mean much to you. But the last half of the episode was crap, there I said it, after enjoying the show for all that time I was disappointed by the ending. That the centurions went off in the basestar that the others agreed to stay on the planet they had found and live among the inhabitants after confirming they could interbreed with them and that they declared the planet Earth. Only to jump forward 150,000 years to find out they were on this planet and that the whole adventure took place in the past… I guess that was a nice touch, I’m just not sure we needed to see all the touchy feely moments and the long drawn out conclusion about who went where on the planet etc.

Further the fact that we learn finally that the Six that Gaius Baltar was seeing all the time wasn’t him going mad, wasn’t a cylon chip in his head, she was in fact a guardian angel and that the real Caprica Six had her own Gaius version of the same. I was really disappointed with the creep of the one god religion into the show throughout. Perhaps that was to explain our own leaning on such things and even that different parts of our planet had mutiple gods, whatever it was, I wasn’t a fan.

The biggest disappointment for me was that it seems the ending was a last minute decision. Not only were there Gaius and Caprica Six guardian angels, we find that the Kara that returned to us in Season four after her firey death was also a guardian angel, this seems to have been a last minute change. I so had her pegged as a cylon clone. They had after all stolen Kara’s ovaries back at their baby making center. And there just seemed to be other small changes that given earlier direction didn’t make sense.

I guess I realise that this post is a little all over the place, I was miffed about the ending of the show, but no so much that I wouldn’t rewatch any episode again when the series finally comes out in whole on Blu-ray. I’ll be buying it for sure.

My First Dodgy Tiny Planet

It has a bit of a painted quality to it. I just grabbed the first image I could find that would even remotely work. Over sharpened and the sky is a little too coloured, but it was done more so I could do it and get the knowledge in my head.

In fact I didn’t even use a panorama, just a dodgy single image. First one I came across where I thought the edges could be made to match.

Method taken from Photojojo’s article How to create your own planets using your panormamas (from way back in 2006).

And inspired by Bob Kueppers.

I’ll post some more when I take a few new panoramas.

Shot by TheBobBlog.com (or Bob Kueppers) Bob’s “Little Planets” series is quite captivating.

Essentially these things are essentially 360° panoramas that haven’t been put into a VR application, or at least that’s what I think, I’m still trying to find more info on how to create them.

But yeah, this is just one of many great Little Planets that Bob has created. Check out more in his Little Planets photo series on Flickr or at his Photography site: Idea Attic

UPDATE: Found out they can be created in Photoshop quite easily so I’ll give it a go and post details here once done.

Huge thanks to Bob for the idea though, I know it’s not the first time I’ve seen them but his execution of them is awesome.
