Geek Fun

Vedran at work told me about a great site today… here I was thinking IRC was dead and yet it seems to be alive and well.

There is a cool site called QDB found at bash.org. A couple of gems I found today include;

Cat1013: I said that it was fine, but that it makes a funny noise whenever I shift.
HermitKing: So?
Cat1013: I left the “f” out of “shift”.

So if you have a history in IRC or any IM for that matter then check out the latest listings on bash.org. They should have you laughing.

Happy Birthday to Me

It’s true, as much as we try to avoid it, we all get older. Time marches on like a machine and leaves us wasted by the side of the road as age wearies us and makes it hard for us to keep up.

A little melodramatic for sure, but entirely true.

My birthday is always the time of the year that I evaluate my life and everything that has come before. It’s not really a time I enjoy. I earnestly want to live forever. I want to see what becomes of the human race to the end of eternity. When the sun burns out and dies I want to be here and bear witness to all that man has created. But it’s not to be.

I found out two days ago from my younger brother that my Dad has finally been diagnosed by his doctor and does in fact have Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or a thickening of the muscle in the heart. It’s hereditary and now Mum is freaking out wanting all us kids to get tested.

As in my post Who Needs a Heart?, I know my older brother and my sister have show any symptoms of something similar and am sure both of them are being tested for it, now it has a name. I’m not sure I want the test… I don’t want to have an excuse about why something may happen. My life is going so well right now I don’t want a slap up the side of the head.

Speaking of things going well; The Usagi Project is gonna be huge, even if I say so myself. What is The Usagi Project? As I’ve told others we’re not quite sure, my friend and fellow co-worker Sue and I have found an egg and now we’re keeping it warm to see what comes of it. There’s gonna be a lot of looking into it to find out what might be inside but within a few months we hope to have something hatched and fighting for its little life.

The Scissor Sisters

Meanwhile I’m currently listening to the Scissor Sisters, the song Intermission is playing… the main line in the song is “Happy yesterday to all, we were born to die.” ROFL.

Ahhh the Scissor Sisters, yay… today I’m making out like a bandit. In December we bought tickets to the Scissor Sisters concert here in Melbourne on February 9. They were suposed to be my birthday present, and I was happy with that.

Having missed the Scissor Sisters when they were last here I was overjoyed when David told me we’d be going this time around. I hear they put on a great show. To top it off we’re going with Chris and Narissa, two fantastic people. It’s sure to be a fantastic night and after a long wait it is now just over a week away.

Then a few weeks ago we bought my brand new Canon 400D digital camera… and THAT was going to be my birthday present, this of course was more than enough. I love taking photos and have been ailing for some time with my poor 10D which has been a little worse for wear of late.

Given what I’ve gotten so far, I woke this morning expecting a nice “Happy Birthday”, I certainly didn’t expect a package to be pulled out from under the bookshelf. Unwrapping it you won’t believe my joy, and reading this I know you’re all gonna be thinking “Your so gay!” but I was truly thrilled to see three seasons of Wonder Woman in my hands. It’s something I’ve wanted for a while but never gotten around to buying, so thanks to David, Jody, Greg, Jacob and Maygen for the great present.

One thing I love is the first episode is called The New Original Wonder Woman, an episode I don’t think I ever saw growing up. And the “New Original” may be in reference to the 1974 TV show that starred Cathy Lee Crosby as Diana Prince / Wonder Woman. It didn’t do very well and just over a year later (late 1975) was re-made with Lynda Carter… the one woman who will always be Wonder Woman to me.

They are making a movie, Joss Whedon is listed as the Director (at the moment). Rumours of this movie has been going around since the mid-90s and many, many actresses have been rumoured to have been approached to play Wonder Woman including Sandra Bullock, Katie Holmes, Kate Beckinsale, Sarah Michelle-Geller, and even Julia Roberts. I don’t know if this movie will ever be made, but if it does Lynda Carter better be in it somewhere or I’m not going to see it!

Enough of a Wonder Woman rant. Time to go and get ready for work (why didn’t I organise the day off?). I have to stop off and buy a cake on the way… this is the first job I’ve had where the person who’s birthday it is has to buy the cake. Ah well, it is probably better than the bank, where we used to put $2 in every week that went to paying for the cakes, that would add up to about $100 bucks in a year and that’s way more than I’d ever spend on a cake. Though the left overs were generally spent on a nice social event at the end of each year.
I hope you all have a great day… I know I will. Thanks to all who have pre-empted the day and pre-wished happy birthday. And Huge Thanks to Craig who wishes me happy birthday to a future date, cause he is still in yesterday… does that make sense?

We’ve Laid an Egg

It’s true, see for yourself usagi.com.au. And for peeps who want to know… it’s correctly pronouced u(like ew)-sa-gi.

It’s our new baby… we’re hoping something nice hatches soon. Keep an eye on it for us will you?

Local PlayStation launch in March

Asher Moses
January 25, 2007

The PlayStation 3 (PS3) games console will go on sale in Australia on March 23, but only the more expensive $999 model will be offered, Sony said today.

Sony had previously promised also to offer a $829 bundle, which had similar features but lacked memory card slots and wireless connectivity and included a smaller hard drive.

Additionally, Australians buying the $999 model will pay more than Americans, who have been able to buy the console for $US599 ($770) since it was launched in the US in November last year.

In choosing not to sell the cheaper model, Sony said it was “responding to retail and consumer demand”, and would consider introducing it later this year.

Are Sony kidding themselves or hoping that Australian’s are fools? Paying over $200 more than the conversion rate for a PS3?

I suggest we boycot the sale of the PS3, not because I’m a Nintendo fanboy but because I’m sick of seeing the early adopters stung with a high price, while Johnny Come Latelies pay a lower fee.

How about they release the damn thing at a resonable price and leave it there?

Many experts have already gone on record as saying the the PS3 is a fantastic machine, from which no one will ever see the full potential. So why are we going to be paying for features we will never use?

And what’s with talk of the second unit, sans memory card slots and wireless connectivity at only a $179 saving. Phewy to that.

C’mon Aussies, let’s not buy this thing until they drop the price… shipping per unit to Australia has to be cheaper than it is to the states, Tiawan is so much closer to here. So why are we paying so much more!

Something’s Coming

Been thinking long and hard for the last few weeks about a business venture I’ve been thinking about doing with SZ from work. It’s just a little side project which now has a name, but I can’t reveal that just yet… and what will it do, can’t tell you that either.

It is all in the works and it WILL all come together. V.excited about this, I hope we can get others excited too.

I always thought I’d take Tyroga to a worldwide audience in the form of a brand, but not so just yet. So check back in future, we’ll have something for you.

I Don’t Always Like What I See When Asleep

If you choose to continue on and read the post that follows the link I give you this warning. It’s not one of the nice dreams. It’s not one of the cryptic dreams.

While I have gone into some detail, I’ve also left a lot out. It was like I was seeing this through the eyes of someone else. I was a passive observer, seeing what they saw. I didn’t like dreaming this and that is why the warning exists.

I think if you’re reading this in an RSS reader the link may not work and the whole thing will appear… if you’re likely to be disturbed the stop reading now. Continue reading “I Don’t Always Like What I See When Asleep”

Crash

Crash Movie Poster“It’s the sense of touch. In any real city, you walk, you know? You brush past people, people bump into you. In L.A., nobody touches you. We’re always behind this metal and glass. I think we miss that touch so much, that we crash into each other, just so we can feel something.”

While the quote is in relation to the placement of the movie, I think the same can be said for most cities in the world. We go about our day without really looking at the other people around us… it’s one of the things I really think about and this movie makes me think even more.

I like to think that I have grown up without prejudice, my mum taught us that people are people and not colours. Not from anything she said, I mean she didn’t sit us down and tell us that everyone is the same and that no one person is better than another but in her actions I never saw her look down on anyone, she never openly critisised someone based on their race, cultural beliefs or religion.

Sure some people were “morons”, or “idiot drivers”, but they weren’t “Asian drivers” or “Wog drivers”. And I think that as kids we learn our prejudices from our parents and for most of us those prejudices will influence the rest of our lives.
The movie Crash was thought provoking. I began watching it thinking it wasn’t much of a movie, the interweaving of characters and plotlines is certainly nothing new and we’ve had a run of them of late. The ones I thought of during the movie were Love Actually, and Go. But Crash was more… Crash was a serious look at our prejudices. Our belief that even those of us who see themselves as non-racists still have an inkling of pre-conceived opinion based on colour, race, religion regardless of our status in life.

I’m forced to look at my own life and note that I do not openly or knowingly form opinions of any one culture, to be honest I think the whole human race is a little flawed. But I do note that when I describe someone, for any reason, their race may come into it. While I don’t see it as a form of racism to say, “check out that guy” and when asked “which one?”, I reply “The Asian dude”. But I can honestly say I don’t recall myself ever saying, “The white guy”.

So yeah sometimes colour comes into it… but for me it is never in a derogitory way or with a preconcieved opinion. For me it is only ever used as a reference to a characteristic of an individual.

I’m not sure I’ve captured the essence of what I wanted this posting to be about… I’ve just finished watching the movie and it’s all still tumbling around in my head so it’s a little muddled right now. Maybe I’ll come back to this later.

All I want to leave you with is the need to see the movie. Crash, I think it deserved the Acadamy Award. Oh and Ryan Phillippe is pretty hot… ;)
